The Chase that could have got us killed

63rd Episode. 1989. Jaipur. Those days I was in Mudra Communications Pvt Ltd based at Ahmedabad and used to service Mayur Fabric account in Gulabpura. It was also the time that we at Mudra were trying to gauge if opening a satellite office at Ahmedabad made sense. Helping me was a dear friend from the Hindi newspaper with Headquarters’ at Ajmer.

We were trying to create a strong relationship at few of the potential clients. The day was spent in chasing the clients and evening’s drinking with like-minded friends.  Arvind would help us manage to get in places, which otherwise were inaccessible to non-members. Jaipur Club was one of these places.

That night, after few drinks we were walking through the sports facilities in the  club. Nothing much, the dead Billiards table where I had recently lost a match, The tennis table, the card room and next to it the Badminton hall.

mudra copyIt was the first and the only time I saw her. She must been around 20-24, beauty beyond imagination. She was playfully teasing her friend in the game. It was clear she was far superior to her opponent. I felt that it was as if she was in the hunt. She was enjoying having the opponent at her mercy. She made her run all over the court and at will hit a smash hard to pick.

We stood at the side-line and kept watching the game. Suddenly at sharp 9 PM, she very abruptly wrapped up the game. Soon she had changed and was now in a smart t-shirt and jeans that made her stand out in the crowd. As she jumped in the driving seat of the open jeep parked right next to the club entrance, I dragged Arvind to take out his car. For no reason I wanted to follow her. Poor Arvind he just did what I asked him to. Soon her jeep was doing a good speed on the road. We were keeping a safe distance. In our rear view we saw another jeep with loads of beefy kind of guys waving and driving fast to catch up with her. I knew she was in trouble and I in no way was going to the knight in shining armour. Suddenly the jeep with those guys overtook us and came between her Jeep and our car. Suddenly Arvind was awake, he braked real hard burning some tyre and parked car in the side. I was zapped. I looked at him and saw that he was still trying to regain control on his breath.

All Arvind said “Saale Marwayega Kya, who princess thi joh jeep mai thi aur who saale uskey bodyguard. Agar hum zyada pass hote toh saale gutter mai miltey. Sari uttar di saali nai. Aab chaal wapas club todhi aurr peetey hai”(Stupid you will get us killed, that was the princess and her bodyguard. If we had not maintained that safe distance or would have done anything our bodies would have been found in gutter. Thank god. Now that the effect of drinks had vanished with this encounter, lets go back to the club and drink a bit more)

‘But boss, she was too beautiful, too cute a real princess’ that was all I could say.
