LETHAL COMBINATION

31st EPISODE : 1994. Delhi. HTA (Hindustan Thompson Associates),  35 Jhandewala, Rani Jhansi Road. I was servicing MOTOROLA account and reporting to SAMIR VERMA. He was a relationship-oriented person and converted most of his clients into good friends. RAHUL VERGHESE of Motorola was no exception.

Rahul Verghese had recently shifted into his new house at Defence colony. His office was at Nehru Place.

One weekend Samir invited Rahul with family and me for lunch. Sometime around 11:30 Am, the celebration started with beer as a starter. The women team; Mrs Sonia Verma and Rahul’s wife objected to our drinking beer in afternoon. We presented our argument that Beer Daru Nahi Hoti. Just six percent Alcohol. (Beer is no hard drink) and got their permission to drink. We continued drinking and they kept on objecting. Every time we would present the same argument. With time it became a joke. Rahul would laugh and say ‘Samir beer only 6 percent…’. We would all laugh as if that was the best joke in town. Soon, another beer would appear. Honestly speaking, we did manage a decent amount of beer. We were high but not really high, if you can understand what I mean

Post lunch around 2 PM, Rahul along with wife left for home. As they were new to Vasant Kunj, Samir gave them directions to take the first left turn and the left turn at the next T-junction. I do remember that Rahul’s wife offered to drive. Unfortunately, the lethal combination of beer, heightened self-confidence and male ego kicking in, Rahul insisted to drive. We were comfortable with it and asked him to call once he reached home.

I too left, reached home and promptly went to sleep.

Around 5:30 PM, I was woken up with the shrill ringing of phone. Samir was at the other end. He was checking if Rahul had called. I said no. Samir lectured me  on our responsibilities and said he would make the call.

Soon I got another call from Samir. He was laughing his guts out. Mr. Rahul Verghese had just hit home. He had taken three and a half hour to travel a distance of   12 km between Vasant Kunj and Defence colony!

The story was simple. When he came out of Vasant Kunj, instead of taking left he took a right. His wife did try correcting him, but then lethal

combination of afternoon beer and male ego was already in action. This flares up when fairer sex questioning our abilities. It happened with Rahul too. He told her he knew the way and she could just let him drive. Finally, he managed to drive via Delhi airport- Meharuli- Saket- Nehru place before hitting his original destination Defence colony. In this process, he drove  28 KM km in some 3.5 hours instead of driving a simple route of  12  KM, which should have taken him just 40 minutes.

The high point is a small episode within this trip. Having realized his mistake, reaching Nehru place was a relief to him. From here, he knew the way to Defense colony. It was his everyday route. He tried covering his mistake by suggesting that he came this way as he had to pick an important file from office. So up he went in the lift and came down with the first file he could find. And then more confident then ever reached home.………………………………………………………………………………………….
