The Macau Walk

By | 04/01/2015

48th Episode. I believe to understand a city you need to walk through it.  You then soak the city culture, ambience, smell and  environment more than you can ever do by taking a cab – point to point. Fun gets  doubled if you are interested in photography and have a friend to keep your company. Try this as an  unplanned approach.

MACAU visit in 2014 was one such opportunity. I have been to Macau three times but that was just the hotels and casino, something was missing. At the max, a hurried tour through the city points and the famed massage centres.  This time on the last day of our  IAFA awards trip, I propped the idea of taking a walk across the city. As usual many hands went up. Atul Talegaonkar, Raja Mitra were game for it. Dharmendra Atri, Jaidep Dhagat, Commissioner ( Rajiv Gautam) were not so inclined. For them ‘Dong Dong’ the sound of mechanical roulette table was more tempting.

MACAU4Ultimately, the three who went for the walk were Peter Suresh- the enthusiast photographer,

Binayak – the avid walker and observer and myself- the compulsive city experience person.  Peter and I had done this thing kind of thing earlier at Singapore and Pattaya. I must say Binayak was a complete sport and full enthu person fro the activity.

Armed with our cameras and a map of the Macau, we started in our quest to explore the city.  First on the list was the point nearest to our hotel. The name suggested a rich cultural experience. Old Quarters, a serene bay side township welcomed us with deserted roads. In spite of the beauty around the bay, it was still a bit of a disappointing start. It seemed the city was dead at the hour.

MACAU2A quick huddle happened over some coffee and delicious buns and cake. We were fast to arrive at our next course of action that would set the tone for the day.

A quick cab-ride took us to the north most point of the city. This was early morning around 9:30 AM. We were in the area that was bursting with people. We could see a  lot more tourist, a completely different ambience than the old quarters we had left behind. Fancy colourful umbrella, men invariably with cigarettes in their hand huddled near the smoking points, rich coloured buildings on the cobbled street, beautiful girls in tanks tops and hipster shorts adding to the atmosphere.

MACAU 1We admired the church, the garden with low cost exercise equipment, the market, downtown, Tower, floor with gold bars, and many more things. Eating at a small joint. Walking through the streets with just the map in hand. Getting tired and yet pushing ourselves to go another mile (literally). All this ended at 5 PM when we hit our hotel. A hell of an experience, that is best represented by pictures.
