The Missing Lips

44th Episode. Late eighties. I was in Mumbai on a shoot assignment for a fabric brand of repute. This was the 4th shoot involving the same model. She was now more than a friend. She later on went o to do few movies.

We had somehow clicked in our first meeting itself. We were in regular touch. Whenever I was in Mumbai, we would meet and take those lovely walks by the queen’s necklace. She lived in Colaba. She was successful but not happy. He life was a journey through a troubled family life. She dropped out of collage to concentrate in her modelling career. She realised this career leaves no options and is short lived. This was what bothered her a lot and gave birth to multiple level of insecurities. When I talked with her I always tried to make her see the brighter side and for the time she was with me, she would smile. I knew the smile was there to hide her fears.

Post shoot near the mud island we stayed back. We held hands and walked along the beach. She was a lot happier that day. The smile seemed more real. She was smiling with here yes and wanted to share something more. She was now 21. It was her birthday. She was adult and could now make her own decisions. She could leave the house that threatened her smile. She could now continue her education if she wanted and she could fall in love with the man she wanted. I was enjoying her incoherent speak. She was free.

She then turned towards me and raised herself. She was trying to look into my eyes. She was reading me. She held me for long and then I heard her softly say ‘Sanz would you marry me’. This was unexpected but I knew my answer. It was a soft NO and I told her why. She accepted it as a fact. She continued to hold my hand. There were no tears. We wanted to remain friends as if the conversation had never happened.

However, that was the last walk we took together. We kept in touch but the spark had died. She closed her fears from me. She never sounded her insecurities. Soon I heard she was in love and she shared it with me. I was happy but that happiness was short lived.

A year after her first movie. The small story in the newspaper told me that she had committed suicide. I looked back and thought of the calls that remained unanswered. The unopened letters. The walk that never happened and somewhere a part of me died. Not knowing why I felt as if I was in some way responsible for it.

With time the memories died. Recently in a small town, I saw the cassette of her movie staring at me. The movie that played in my mind was the last walk. I saw her smile as I air kissed the lips that were not there.
