After watching BABY, I allowed the film sink in overnight, so that I could avoid adrenalin thrusting biased review. This is a short review, which happens when the movie has a lot going for it. The only question that remains is; Has Akshay delivered his best? Hopefully not.
If there is enough of BOLLYWOOD LOVE in your entertainment quotient. BABY is a movie to watch. I wish it a grand success. Maybe that will make other directors and producer feel challenged to scale up their canvas to make such films.
Baby is a story of covert anti-terrorist cell set after Mumbai attack ( 26/11). It started with 12 selected individuals from Para-forces and is now down to 4. Eight of them have been killed and one has even betrayed the team.
The real dram starts when the cell gets a lead that requires quick solution. From their on- the movie get a rhythm of its own. Leading the team is Ajay (Askshay Kumar) in one of his finest performances. He is a loving caring father but is willing to put his life on line for the country. He has that WILL DO- CAN DO attitude and a serious job to do. He keeps going to conferences (camouflage for the family), whenever his boss, the head of BABY; Feroz Ali Khan ( Danny Denzongpa ) directs. Danny fits the role to ‘T’ but then we always have under utilised this phenomenal actor by restricting him to such stereotyped roles.
NIRMAL PANDEY ( writer- director) must be credited for keeping the audience in loop and engaged. He continues from ‘A
Wednesday ‘and ‘Special 26’ to deliver a on-the-edge thriller so non-bollywood. A lot hollywoodish in its scale- looks – pace and action sequences. It’s a surprise when the Intermission slate comes up.
KAY KAY MENON ( Bilal Khan – terrorist) has a short but impressive performance.
The two people who leave mark other than the Akshay Kumar are Rasheed khan ( Mullah Maulana Mohammed ) the mastermind and the instigator for the terrorist acts and in a short but highly focussed cameo is dependable versatile ANUPUM KHER ( Shuklajee).
While watching the movie, the short sub plots move at a pace keep you engaged. Post the ‘THE END ‘ slate you may feel that they were predictable. A few scene do seem dragged and illogical but hell I just ignore them. I am there in the theatre for enjoyment and entertainment and not for writing a thesis.
Before I close, let me appreciate the short ( not so critical role) played by TAAPSEE PANNU as a secret agent on assignment with Akshay. She does well and maybe we would see more of her in future. In some action sequence she reminds you of SHANTI of south movies, only Taapsee does them better.
Movie is a good PR for Saudi Arabia- a known terrorist funder. Incidentally the over the top MUSLIM TERRORIST is softened by including patriotic Indian Muslim. BABY as an afterthought raises few questions. Like, why are muslims being misled and are we taking care of them. Thankfully it restrains itself from going into debate or misplaced suggestions.
For a change Baby is without songs, a bold step within Indian cinema.
