I will not be unreasonable to a ‘Golmaal Again’ that is honest in its advertising. ‘No Logic Only Magic’.
Just like a Govinda movies, when you decide to watch a Rohit Shetty film titled ‘Goalmaal Again’, you know what to expect. Rohit does not leave anything to chance. At the very start in the title song, he unleashes loud coloured high decibel music. It is an understated warning to what will follow.
It is an illogical multiple cast act that defies any and every story sense. ‘Golmaal Again’ does have a bit of story. It holds it together until few minutes into second half. Then the secret is out and as normal the director fails to find a clean way to wrap it up.
Other than the last quarter hour that makes it seem long.
Golmaal Again is a full paisa vasool laugh every moment kind of film.
The five elemental props Gopal (Ajay Devgan), Madhav (Arshad Warsi), Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor), and the Laxmans (Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Khemmu) are there with much-improved chemistry, coordination and timing. It is an experience to watch very confident Arshad Warsi and Shreyas Talpade steal the show. Ajay Devgan for a change seems to be enjoying the act.
There are some continuity elements from earlier franchise. There is the ganging up of two teams. There is the finger breaking Devgan, can’t speak Tushar Kapoor, Pappi and Vasooli Bhai. Everyone makes their presence count. There is a small bit of the act that uses Nana Patekar style and every time it makes you laugh for entirely different reasons. .
There is Johny Lever with his act that brings more laughter than any other gags in the film. Ever dependable Sanjay Mishra amplifies smallest of screen appearance.
Tabu does a fabulous job as the librarian who can see the ghost. Neil Nitin Mukesh and Prakash Raj for the umpteenth time are playing the same role and offer no newness to their screen presence. Parineeti, the new female lead in ‘Golmaal Again’ is completely wasted, and you feel as you expected a lot more with her in the franchise.
It takes something to keep a franchise of Golmaal alive for 11 years and promise the next instalment with the end credits. We have an internal bet that the 5th edition ( ‘Golmaala Again & Again’ ) will have Alia Bhat as the new face.
In case you are looking for laughter, and you do not need logic in everything, you watch. In case you want to enjoy a movie and laugh loudly without being worried about what other’s think about you. In case you want to enjoy today and tomorrow seriously tell colleagues why you hated ‘Golmaal again’, get to the nearest theatre and watch the magic happen. No logic is guaranteed.
