Habits are almost unconscious actions that, through their smooth no, no-effort operation, create space in our minds to do more. They’re repetitive and often shape us and our interaction with the external world. Some habits stand out, like a beacon of individuality. In my journey of self-discovery, I’ve recognised a few unique habits that are now integral to my life. I believe they, in some ways, contribute to my sense of peace and productivity in their own distinct way.
UNIQUE HABIT 1: NEVER LEAVE A BOOK UNFINISHED.
I never leave a book unfinished. Books, for me, are not just sources of knowledge or entertainment; they are the gateways to new worlds, perspectives, and ideas.
Incomplete books represent untold stories, unanswered questions, and unfinished journeys. I have trained myself to read every book till the end. There is a value of commitment and the satisfaction of completion. I approach each book with the intention of fully immersing myself in its narrative, knowing that the journey is just as important as the destination. There is a story behind this act, where on my first attempt to write, I realised how much effort every author must put into their work. Having written 10 books, my respect for their efforts has only amplified.
If I don’t like a book, I chide myself for not understanding what the author may be trying to say, but I finish the book as a mark of respect for the efforts. And many times, I have been surprised with the results- as few books that seemed so slow, tough and meandering turn out to be brilliant and perfect by the time you finish them. So, if I read 60-70 books a year- finding a few not-so-good and reading them fully is far better than missing out on a few because of leaving them incomplete.
UNIQUE HABIT 2: MEDITATION BY DOODLING.
I have a ritual of doodling every day. It is a form of meditation unique to me. In a world filled with constant noise and distractions, doodling is my sanctuary of silence. With a blank sheet of paper and a pen in hand, I allow my mind to wander freely, channelling my thoughts and emotions into abstract shapes and patterns. In this state of flow, I find clarity amidst chaos and peace amidst turmoil.
Doodling isn’t about creating masterpieces; it’s about embracing the process, surrendering to the moment, and finding solace in simplicity. Each stroke of the pen is meditation, a gentle reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the present.
Doodling is about embracing imperfection as it refuses to be bound to any style and elements. It’s a very personal expression and art, where the errors can be covered up and rectified and are only known to the creator. Moreover, with doodling, I have experimented with creating a unique Signature Art Style and crafting thematic and commissioned artworks.
UNIQUE HABIT 3: ALWAYS RESPOND.
I am obsessively committed to timely communication. Whether it’s a phone call, an email, or a handwritten letter, I respond within 24 hours. In a world where attention is scarce and connections are fleeting, this habit is my way of prioritising relationships and honouring the importance of human connection.
By being responsive and reliable, I’ve built trust and goodwill in both personal and professional spheres. More importantly, I’ve cultivated a sense of accountability and respect for others’ time. If I do not reply to a message- it only means that I have not received it. If I cannot reply or act on the message- I will still at least acknowledge it and tell you when I will react.
I believe that in a digital age where messages can easily get lost in the plethora of devices and platforms, a timely response speaks volumes about one’s character and integrity.
NET NET.
These three habits may seem unconventional to some, but to me, they are essential pillars of my daily routine. They have not only brought me peace and productivity but also a sense of fulfilment and purpose.
In a world that often celebrates conformity, our quirks and idiosyncrasies make us remarkable. So, here’s to the power of habits, to the small actions that shape our lives and define who we are.
while on Habits- do read ATOMIC HABITS by JAMES CLEAR– here is my review of it.
Habits are not rules. And in addition to Habits which are somewhat Unique- I have few rules. Do read the book- 25 Rules of Life- i wish I had Known earlier– and you will love it.
