ZEE5 made a mistake with Ghoomketu !- Movie review

Don’t be led the wrong path. GHOOMKETU is a movie ( is it?) that you should not even attempt watching. A 2014 comedy ( is it?) written and directed by Pushpendra Nath Misra who is also writer-director-producer of Taj Mahal 1989 ( and a what a web-series it was). Ghoomketu scheduled for a 2018 theatre release, but destiny had other plans. Finally, Ghoomketu, produced by Phantom Films and Sony Pictures was released o ZEE5 on 22nd May 2020.

It is a story of an aspiring small-town writer who is rejected and taunted by the local newspaper Chief editor. He runs away to Mumbai for a pre-decided 30 days period to realise his dream. The whole movie is a patchwork that some teenagers could be scripting -shooting and editing. It silly to the point of imagining that someone makes such a movie and finds buyers to release!.

My note-blog-review is a social service to help my fellow citizens to avoid the torture called Ghoomeketu

The movie tries creating a vignette of related characters and incredible incidents in an attempt to sew a movie tory. His extended family is an inspiration for the stories. He has been married for just 10 days and is disappointed that his wife is not slim. His Dadda keeps shouting and does not express his love for him. His Bua ( father’s sister) who encourages Ghoomketu to go after his dreams. His chacha ( uncle) is a character, He went after his love and lost her, but in exchange, he got a political career. There is also, a cop in Mumbai who is under pressure to find Ghoomketu without having a picture. And then there is an astrologer who is trying hard to make sense of Ghoomketu’s temporary migration to Mumbai. The trailer was interesting and one can not find fault with people who watched it till now.

In 2014, as a comedy film, Nawazuddin Siddiqui like Freaky Ali is the centre of Ghoomketu, however, in 2021 he seems repeated. Raghuvir Yadav, a gem of an actor, is wasted here. However, Illa Arun does sparkle in a few scenes. The one scene I really enjoyed is when Ghoomketu ( and yes that is the name of Nawazuddin Siddiqui character) is telling her the script of a horror film.

Chitrangada Singh, Ranveer Singh, and Sonakshi Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan play themselves in cameo roles- but even that does not help the film. The director-writer tries to share all genre of films in the short duration. The three elements, Ghoomketu missing report at Mohna and its impact on an Inspector at Mumbai due to political connection, Ghoomketu’s repeated hilarious efforts in experimenting with every genre by taking inspiration from his real-life in Mohna. And his taking every rejection in stride. They were expected to Ghoomketu enjoyable. Let me tell you, they fail miserably.

You don’t even bother grading and giving stars to Ghoomketu. How ZEE5 and WHY ZEE5 ever bought it in the name of the content and premiering it on OTT is the most critical question? Think, it is for such criminal buys, there should be an internal detail and tightening of buy-associate process. I would want to know if someone really saw the movie before inking the deal or there were other unquestionable reasons for doing so.
