Haseen Dilruba on Netflix. Movie Review

Ok, I am late in my review. In the pre-COVID theatrical release era, you won’t have found a place to view Haseen Diruba now. Directed by Vinil Mathew, starring Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane.  Released on July 03.2021.

However, in this OTT release,  you have an option to watch it on Netflix. Release date: July 03, 2021. (and I always read it as Haseena Dilruba- expecting another Mumbai Gang war movie)

A still from Haseen Dilruba

Rani(Taapsee) marries a simple middle-class engineer Rishu (Vikrant Massey), they are not compatible in many ways. They both try. Then one day, Neel(Harshvardhan Rane), a cousin of Rishu, who takes tourists on river rafting, comes into their life. He is staying in the house for the tourist season. Sparks fly, and Rani gets emotionally entangled, believing that they have a future. Neel is not looking for anything that is a commitment, and he scoots. One day- there is a gas cylinder blast in the house. Everything is burnt, and Rishu is identified with the hand that has Rani tattooed on it.  Naturally, the cops suspect Rani and Neel of murder. The rest of the film follows cops investigating and trying to find out what happened to Rishu and how it happened.

I liked the movie- though it has a low review across the net. The story is fine with enough open ends and twisted links. The ending becomes clear ( or was clear to me ) much nearer the end. Tapsee is good; she is my current favourite actress- however, she does overdo and sometimes seems too bland poker-faced. Vikrant Massey as Rishu again impresses as a middle-income guy, and I think he is now bracketed into this stereotyped role. However, there is a thrill missing. You are never on edge, and unfortunately, you never end up taking sides. I mean polarised sides, hating or loving someone beyond logic, which could have made the film a real success.

Still, it is a decent movie to watch. And I love parts of it. And then there is a Panditjee- who you must meet only if you watched the movie. Go give Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey some time. They deserve it.
