The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Mitch Albom. Book review.

You like it, or you don’t. Mitch Albom novel ‘The Five People You Meet In Heaven’ is one such book. It joins

‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill, ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’,  and ‘Veronica decides to die’ in the list of motivational books I gift as an encouragement.

‘The Five People You Meet In Heaven’ leaves you with a simple, strong thought. Nothing is wrong or a waste, everything has a logic and place, and what you do could be connected in so many different ways.  And I love the idea of Heaven.

I should have read ‘The Five People You Meet In Heaven’ first published in 2003 a long way back, but one can say, I was destined to read it now. Mitch Albon as a writer was introduced to me by Sanjay Khare of EURORSG somewhere in 2008 when he gifted me ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’. I found the book too powerful. So much so, that I could not muster enough courage to read other books written by him.

Now the hunger is back. And after ‘The Five People You Meet In Heaven’ I am most likely to read a  few more of his books.

Mitch Albom, the author with cover of his book 'The Five People You Meet In Heaven'

‘The Five People You Meet In Heaven’

Eddie is an 83-year-old wounded war veteran, an old man with a life that he regrets and finds uninspiring templated. He thinks and feels he has been wronged and had to compromise because of circumstances. He works at the RUBY amusement park and is responsible for maintenance. He dies in an accident while trying to save a kid.

His soul goes into the journey meeting Five People who explain their and his part on their lives.  They tell you about life’s interconnectivity and interdependency. You may not know all of them. But they do know you. . Each of the narratives is a story from Eddie life, completing a known or unknown perspective and delivering a message, learning to him.

In life, a sacrifice of any nature, big or small, compelled or voluntary affects the interdependent ecosystem of lives we know and touch and the lives we don’t even know about.

Please do read it. Highly Recommended. ‘The Five People You Meet in Heaven’ by Mitch Albom. INR 299. Pages 208. Published in India by Hachette India.
