OM GANESHAYA NAMAH.

The name of Lord Ganesha is taken before starting any auspicious work. It is believed that taking his name removes all the obstacles and smoothens the path to success.

LORD GANESH STATUES.

Lord Ganesh is the most versatile God. We, the followers and worshippers, have allowed our creativity to run amok by creating Banesha statues representing all possible activities in life. One can get these statutes of him as a singer, musician, adventurer- sportsperson, scientist, doctor, postman, etc.… you name the profession or activity. Somewhere, someone would have already made a Ganesh idol representing it. There is also the use of every material to make Ganesh statues. You get them clay, sand, glass, crystal, coconut, rice, watermelon, and paper. Every material, form, and representation seems acceptable when it is Lord Ganesha.

GANESH CHATURTHI

As usual, there is a debate if Ganesh Chaturthi is the birthday of Ganesha or not. Like most other festival this also has the standard answer- in some places, Ganesh Chaturthi of Badrapada ( August-September) is considered Lord Ganesha’s birthday. However, most agree and celebrate   Ganesh Jayanti (Ganesha’s birthday) on the Magha Shukla Chaturthi (also called  Tilkund Chaturthi and Varad Chaturthi). It is the Shukla paksha Chaturthi day (the fourth day of the bright fortnight or the waxing moon) in the month of Magha (January/February).

Ganesh Chaturthi in Badrapaksha ( August-September) is the period Lord Ganesha comes to earth to visit his followers. The 10-day Ganesh Utsav starts on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of Shukla Paksha ( Waxing Moon) Bhadrapada (August–September), the sixth month of the Hindu calendar and ends on Anant Chaturdashi.

Anant Chaturdashi is also dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu in the form of Anant. Once a devotee keeps Anant vrat ( fast) on Anant Chaturdashi, he or she keeps doing the vrat for 14 years.

Anant Chaturdashi, the day dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesha, has a symbolic meaning. It reminds us that, like Lord Vishnu resting in the Sheshnaga, one must remain undisturbed by life’s duality, happiness, or sorrow. If one can stay balanced and keep equilibrium in both situations, then only the person can know the true self. On the other side, Ganesha represents bodily consciousness that comes as a temple for the soul. As the body has to finally dissolve into the one and only one Paramatma. Representatively on Ganesh Chaudas or Anant Chatudashi, we do Lord Ganesha idols’ visharjan (submerging in water). So, be practical and be religious and bring home only eco-friendly idols that will fully dissolve in water.

 LORD GANESHA- the name

Ganesha and Ganapati is a Sanskrit compound word. Gana means a group and isha / Pati means Lord or Master. Gana here refers to the troop of semi-divine beings that form part of the retinue of Lord Shiva, Ganesha’s father. Lord Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom.

Ganesha is considered the eldest son of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva in South India and the younger son in North India.

BIRTH OF LORD GANESHA

REFERENCE 1.

Once upon a time, Goddess Parvati ( wife of Lord Shiva) was going to take a bath. At that time, the regular guard, Nandi, was not there to guard the door. Goddess Parvati took some turmeric paste (another version says she created him from the dirt of her body) and made a human form. She then breathed life into it. Goddess Parvati took the boy as her son and entrusted him to guard the main gates.

When Lord Shiva returned, Lord Ganesha stopped him from entering the house. A battle started, and by the time Goddess Parvati came out to check, Lord Shiva had chopped Lord Ganesha’s head. The head flew far away from Mount Kailash.

Goddess Parvati was upset and asked Lord Shiva to bring Ganesha back to life.

A search for the head started, but no one could find the head. Lord Shiva then asked his Gana (followers) to bring any north-facing head of the first dead person they see. They find a baby elephant head and bring it to Lord Shiva, who then places it on Ganesha’s lifeless body and revives him. Thus was the Elephant Headed god- Lord Ganesha created.

Birthplace of Lord Ganesha.

Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave ( meaning- The Abode of Lord Shiva) is where Goddess Parvati went for her bath- is considered the birthplace of Lord Ganesha. It is a limestone cave temple 14 km from Gangolihat in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India. The cave reference was found by Adi Shankaracharya in Skanda Purana. Nowadays, entering Patal Bhuvaneshwar cave is prohibited, and only a tiny, dimly lit section is where devotees are allowed.

LORD GANESHA BIRTH, REFERENCE II.

According to another reference, Lord Shiva and Parvati created Ganesha at the request of Devas. He was given powers to be a Vighnakarta (obstacle-creator ) for rakshasas (demonic beings) and a Vighnaharta (obstacle-averter) for Devas.

LORD GANESHA BIRTH, REFERENCE-III.

Yet another reference says that Lord Ganesha was created by Shiva’s laughter. Because Shiva considered Ganesha too alluring, he gave him the head of an elephant and a protruding belly.

LORD GANESHA BIRTH, REFERENCE-IV.

Lord Ganesha was born from the elephant-headed Goddess Malini after she drank Parvati’s bath water thrown in the river.

LORD GANESHA GETTING THE ELEPHANT HEAD, REFERENCE -V.

A lesser-known story from the Brahma Vaivarta Purana On the insistence of Shiva, Parvati fasted for a year (Punyaka vrata) to Lord Vishnu to grant her a son. After the fast and sacrifice, Lord Vishu announced he would incarnate himself as Goddess Parvati’s son in every Kalpa (aeon).

Accordingly, Ganesha was born to Parvati. All gods were invited to take a look at the baby. However, Shani (Saturn), the son of Surya, hesitated to look at the baby since Shani was cursed with the gaze of destruction. Shani finally looked at the Ganesha from the corner of his left eye. But Goddess Parvati insisted that Shani look at the baby, which Shani finally does.

The moment Shani sees Ganesha, Ganesha’s head falls off. Shiva and Parvati are grief-stricken.

Lord Vishnu rode his divine Vahan (Garuda, the eagle) and rushed to the banks of the Pushpa-Bhadra river. He returned with the head of a young elephant, which was joined to the headless body of Lord Ganesha, thus reviving him.

NAR MULHA or ADI GANESHA

Adhi Vinayaka (Nara Mukha Vinayaka) is Ganesha (Vinayaka) form with a human head before being decapitated by his father, Lord Shiva. This form of Ganesha is rarely worshipped, and only a few temples are dedicated to him. One of these temples is in Thiladhaipadhi. The Adi Vinayaka shrine is just outside the entrance to this Shiva Temple. This place has special importance with Pitru Moksha (ancestor salvation) Temple of Universal Mother Swarnavalli, and Lord SHIVA Muktheeswara.

WHY SHOULD ONE NOT SEE THE MOON ON GANESH CHATURTHI?

One night, young Lord Ganesha was out riding his Vahan (vehicle), the giant rat Kroncha, which, for some reason, tripped. Some references say that Kroncha could not bear the weight of Lord Ganesha returning from a feast at the house of Kuber.

The Moon and his wives (the twenty-seven Constellations) saw the whole episode and started laughing. It angered Lord Ganesha, who cursed the Moon; ‘If anyone sees the Moon, he will bear the pain of Mithya Dosh’. Mithya Dosham translates to false accusation for wrongdoing.

This made the situation unmanageable, as most would see the Moon at night. The Moon and other gods apologised and asked Lord Ganesha to pardon Moon.

Unfortunately, a curse cannot be removed, but its effect can be reduced. So Lord Ganesha changed it to, ‘whoever sees the Moon on the fourth day of the Hindu month Bhadrapada (Ganesh Chaturthi) will be cursed with Mithya Dosha’. Hence, it is said that one must not see the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi.

LORD GANESHA WIVES.

Lord Ganesha has two wives, Riddhi and Siddhi (somewhere called Sidhi and Budhi), who are daughters of Lord Brahma. Riddhi and Siddhi are considered Lord Brahma’s daughters as they were born from his mind. In some places, Lord Ganesha is regarded as a bachelor, and Ridhi-Sidhi are defined as his qualities.

WHY IS GODDESS LAKSHMI WORSHIPED WITH GANESHA?

Goddess Lakshmi is always worshipped with Lord Ganesh. Even in Deepawali, the idols are placed together. Lakshmijee is placed on the right side of Ganeshjee as she is the second mother of Lord Ganesh. One of Lord Ganesha’s name also refers to him as the son of two mothers.

HOW DID LORD GANESHA TUSK WAS BROKEN?

The Broken Tusk- STORY -I

When Maharishi Vyas was narrating the epic Mahabharata, he needed a writer. Ganeshjee agreed on the condition that Maharishi Vyas would recite it in one sitting. Maharishi Vyas agreed and also put his terms. Ganesha will write only after understanding the meaning of every shloka. If Ganesh stopped writing, Vyas would stop the narration.

Now, while writing, Ganeshjee Kalam (pen- or, say, the writing instrument) tip broke. To manage the situation and continue writing, Lord Ganesha broke one of his tusks and wrote with it. That is the reason you see only one tusk, and he is called EekDant.

The Broken Tusk- STORY -II.

Another story refers to one of the immortals, Lord Parashurama. In this episode, Lord Ganesha did not allow Lord Parashurama to enter Shiva’s abode and meet Shiva as Lord Shiva was meditating and had asked not to be disturbed.

Angry at young Ganesha for not listening to him, Lord Parashurama, known for his anger, broke Lord Ganesha’s tusk with his axe. Lord Ganesha allowed the axe to hit and break his tusk because the axe that Lord Parushrama threw was given to him by Lord Shiva. Ganesha did not want anyone later to claim that Lord Shiva’s axe was not a fearsome, effective weapon.

THE GANESHA UTSAV.

Ganesh Utsav is a dominant festival in Maharashtra but is nowadays celebrated across India. The Ganesha idols are placed on raised platforms; mandals or societies keep them for 10 days and submerge them in water. This is called Visharjan. Four stages are followed during this period.

STAGE-1. Pranapratishtha, infusing life in the idols.

STAGE -2. Shhodashopachara, 16 ways of paying tribute.

STAGE -3. Uttarpuja – Puja, after which the idol could be shifted.

STAGE-4. Ganpati Visarjan – immersion of the idol in the river.

The idol is kept in the house generally for 1.5, 3, 5, 7 or 11 days. Most families keep the idols for one and a half days.

The idol is anointed daily with red sandalwood paste, and yellow and red flowers are placed. Ganesha is offered coconut, jaggery, and 21 Modaks (sweet dumplings). Modak’s are considered to be Lord Ganesha’s favourite food.

One person always has to be in the pandal to give company to Lord Ganesh. It is believed that the playful-naughty Lord Ganesha may leave the place.

There are strict guidelines on prayers and meal timings. The place where the idol is kept remains bright and cheerful throughout Lord Ganesha’s stay. So, at night, the lights are on. At the end of the period, the idols are immersed in water bodies.

Lord Ganesha is given a huge send-off on his way back to Kailasha with a promise to return next year. The processions from where Lord Ganesha’s idol is kept to the water body have drummers playing a typical Ganesh Chaturthi beat. People sing devotional songs and dance all the way.

WHY IS GANESH VISRJAN DONE?

Visarjan signifies the birth cycle of Lord Ganesha. He was born of clay (Earth by goddess Parvati), and the idol is immersed in the water, representing a return to home after staying at the devotees’ home or temple.

It is said that the power in the statue during the 10 days of worship is all a human can bear. So, the idol should not be kept longer than 10 days, and Visharjan should be done in Anant Chaturdashi. In a few of the mandaps in Maharashtra, the idol of Lord Ganesha Visharjan is done after 11,13 and even 15 days. As discarding or breaking of the loved god Ganesha is disrespectful, the statue is immersed in water.

WHEN DID GANESH UTSAV START?

Ganesh Utsav is an old festival. Its celebration dates back to the time of Maratha King Shivaji. He strategically used the festival to bring unity among the citizens of his kingdom. Sarvajanik (Public) Ganesh idol was installed first by Bhausaheb Laxman Javale in 1892 in Pune. However, most credit Lokmanya Tilak for transforming it from a private celebration to a grand public event. He used it to bridge the gap between Brahmins and non-Brahmins and find an appropriate context to build a new grassroots unity.

INCARNATIONS OF LORD GANESHA?

There are EIGHT incarnations of Lord Ganesha in Mudgala Purana. Five have a mouse as his vehicle / Vahan, whereas three have other Vahans.

VAKRATUNDA– who killed the demon Matsara. Here, Ganesha Vahan is a Lion.

EKDANTA– killed demon Madasur EKA stands for Maya the embodies and Danta for truth. Ekdanta- the supreme truth that wields the Maya. This avatar relates to the story of Parushrama breaking the tusk. Vahan is a mouse.

MOHODARA. Killed the demon Mohasura. Vahan – Mouse.

GAJANANA. The Lord with an elephant face. Faught LOBHA, the demon of greed born because of Paravati’s curse to King Kuber, when he looked at her with lust while visiting Kailasha. Lobhasura is a son born to Kuber because of his fear of Parvati.

LAMBODARA. Vanquished Krodhasura. Krodhasura was born of Lord Shiva’s anger towards Lord Vishnu, who had taken the form of Mohani- to subdue demons. Vahan- Mouse.

VIKATA. Avatar to Ganesha to stop Kama, the demon of desire. Kamasura was born of the seed of Vishnu. Kamasura married Trishna- the daughter of Mahisasura, and became too powerful. Here, peacock is the Vahan- and he is also called Mayueshwara.

VIGHNARAJ. Remover of obstacles. He killed Mamtasura, who was born of the laughter of Goddess Parvati. She names the male form MAMA and asks him to worship Ganesha. However, Sambara Asura pulled Mama into the demonic cult, and Mama became known as Mamtasura. Here,, the Vahan is Sheshnag.

DHURMRAVANA. The avatar that defeated Ahamkarasura- a demon of self-infatuation.

GANESHA FAMILY.

WIFE: Ganesha’s wives are Riddhi (prosperity) and Siddhi (spiritual power). In some places, another wife,, Buddhi (intellect), is added. These qualities are personified as goddesses. In some places in Maharashtra, the Goddess of culture and arts, Sarasvati, is associated with Lord Ganesha. Lakshmi, the Goddess of luck and prosperity, is associated with Lord Ganesha in some areas. Some people mistakenly think of her as Lord Ganesha’s wife. Whereas, she is the second mother of Ganesha and wife of Lord Vishnu. In large parts of Bengal, Ganesha is linked with the banana tree and called Kala Bo. Note- Banana leaves are only offered and associated with Ganeshjee during Ganesh Utsav, not the rest of the year.

SONS AND DAUGHTERS. Two sons: Shubh (means auspiciousness – some places called Kşema or prosperity) and Lābha (profit). Somewhat a new addition is Jai Santoshi Maa, the daughter of Lord Ganesha – popularised by the 1975 blockbuster film of the same name.

WHY IS LORD GANESHA WORSHIPPED BEFORE ANYONE ELSE?

Here is the episode after which Lord Ganesha started being worshipped before anyone else.

Lord Ganesha has a competition with his brother Karthikeya. To settle the score, Shiva and Parvati suggested that whoever would be first to encircle the Earth would be the winner. Karthikeya swiftly mounted his blue peacock and shot off around the world. On the other hand, Ganesha made his parents sit together and referred to the sacred Vedas: “he who embraces his parents seven times (Pradakshinas) gains the merit of encircling the world seven times”.

Young Ganesh easily won the competition and was given the right to be worshipped before any other God.

WHY IS TULSI NOT PART OF GANESH WORSHIP?

Once Lord Ganesha was doing penance, Tulsi went there, and she was fascinated by Lord Ganesha. She expressed her desire to marry Ganeshji. However, Lord Ganesha did not accept her proposal and said he was a Brahmachari. Angry with his reply, Tulsiji cursed lord Ganesha and his two wives. Since then, Tulsi is not used in the worship of Shri Ganesh.

WHAT DOES GANPATI BAPPA MORYA MEANS?

‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ – the chant every devotee chants during the 10-day Ganesh festival across India echoes in our hearts and minds long after. The complete chant that originated in Marathwada goes like this: “गणपति बप्पा मोरया, पुढ़चा वर्षी लॉकर या।” (Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhcha Varshi Loukar Ya).

Ganpati – the name used for Lord Ganesha- combines two Sanskrit words – Gana and Pati. Gana means a group of people – in this case, humans and Pati mean Lord or Master.

Bappa is a word that says father or Lord – a way of respectfully addressing Lord Ganesha.

Mourya has a fascinating story behind it. Mourya Gosavi, in the 14th century, was a great devotee of Lord Ganesha and a priest of the Hindu Ganpataya sect. Some legends say that Mourya asked a wish from Lord Ganesha that his name be associated with the Lord forever. Ever since then, his name has been taken with Lord Ganesha. Mourya Gosavi’s Samadhi is near the Ganesh Temple in Chinchwad, Maharashtra.

Some say that Mourya denotes the never-ending relationship between God and devotees, with Mourya being the devotee.

The second part of this chant – pudhcha varshi loukar ya, is Marathi for coming soon again next year. It is a way of welcoming Lord Ganesha once again into the lives of his devotees after the 10-day festival ends.

THE IDEAL DIRECTION OF GANESHA’S TRUNK:

Each direction of Ganesha’s trunk signifies a different effect and meaning.

LEFT FACING TRUNK – most preferred for home. Brings positive energies.

RIGHT-FACING TRUNK. Known as Siddhi-Vinayak, it should ideally be worshipped during special rituals.

At THE WORKPLACE, remember to get a standing idol of Ganesha as it brings enthusiasm and positive energy to the workplace.

PLACEMENT. Ganesha Idol should always be placed in the east or west direction of the home. Never place the Ganesh idol in the south direction, as it is the direction of death (Yamraj) and is considered inauspicious. Avoid placing the idol near a washroom or against a wall directly attached to the toilet. Don’t place the Ganesha idol under the staircase, as people walking over the stairs will pass over his head.

Types Of Idol material:

The Ganesha idol, made of Peepal, Neem and Cow dung, is said to attract good fortune and eradicate bad luck. Turmeric idols and white Ganesha are considered to be highly auspicious. Crystal idols bring good luck and remove all Vastu dosh. Silver Ganesha is believed to get fame. Wood Ganesha is said to promote good health. Brass Ganesha can bring happiness.

ASSOCIATED FESTIVALS and ITEMS.

HARTALIKA is observed with a fast by women on the day before Ganesh Chaturthi. GAURI FESTIVAL is the installation of statues of Gauri. DURVA GRASS Lord Ganesha loves the Durva grass. The idols of Lord Ganesha have Greengrass on the right-hand side. The grass with three blades is offered to him, especially, and placed on Ganesha’s right hand. SHANKH, also called the conch shell, is another favourite of Lord Ganesh. The conch shell is required for almost all Hindu rituals and ceremonies. The sound that comes out from the conch shell is considered to be very holy. This is why the conch shell is blown three times during any auspicious ceremony. Lord Ganesha has four hands and holds a Shankh in one hand. BANANA- Lord Ganesha loves eating bananas, and he also loves the leaves of the banana tree. Most of the time, the idol of Lord Ganesha is decorated with banana leaves. According to mythology, Lord Ganesha was married to a banana tree. However, Banana leaves are used in Ganeshjee’s pooja only during Ganesh Chaturthi and following Ganesh Utsav.
